Convert GIF to WebP (animated)

Animated GIFs are heavy. The same animation as WebP is usually much smaller and keeps full colour and soft transparency. Convert your GIFs here, frame by frame, without uploading them.

Output format

ICO: one file with 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px icons (up to the image size), transparent padding for non-square images.

PDF: one page per image. With several images, “Download as one PDF” puts them in a single file in list order.

File size

For JPG, WebP and AVIF. 70–80 is hard to tell from the original. PNG tries lossless and colour reduction, keeping detail unless you request a file-size target (see Advanced).

KB
KB

Aims at or below the maximum counting 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so the file passes whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

Kept metadata is copied from JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF originals into JPG, PNG or WebP output. The orientation tag is reset (the photo is already turned upright) and the embedded thumbnail is removed.

How to convert

  1. Add the GIF files.
  2. Choose the quality (75–85 suits most animations) and, if needed, a smaller size under Dimensions. Both apply to every frame.
  3. Download the WebP files and use them in your page like any image: <img src="animation.webp">.

When WebP is not smaller

Tiny GIFs with a few flat colours and very few frames are already efficient; WebP can come out slightly larger, and the result shows the size difference so you can keep the original. Long, colourful animations, screen recordings and anything made from video usually shrink the most.

Where animated WebP plays

All current browsers show animated WebP. Some chat apps, email programs and older image viewers do not; keep a GIF for those (WebP to GIF converts back).

Measured with Kilomill

A 30-frame, 480 × 270 animated GIF of 1.66 MB became a 59.2 KB animated WebP, 97% smaller, with all 30 frames and their 80 ms timing.

Questions and answers

Are all frames and their timing kept?

Yes. Every frame is converted with its own display time, and the animation loops like the original.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent GIF pixels stay transparent in the WebP.

Can I convert a GIF to MP4 here?

No. Kilomill converts to image formats; WebP is the image format that gives the biggest saving for animations.
