How to convert an animated WebP to GIF
- Add the WebP files. Animated and still WebP can be mixed; stills become one-frame GIFs.
- Optional: make it smaller. Set a smaller size under Dimensions (for example 50%); it applies to every frame. GIF files grow quickly with size and frame count.
- Download the GIFs. The result shows how many frames were kept.
What changes in a GIF
| Animated WebP | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Colours per frame | Millions | Up to 256 (chosen per frame) |
| Transparency | Soft edges (alpha) | On or off per pixel |
| File size | Small | Often 2–5× larger |
| Plays in | Current browsers | Everywhere, including email and older apps |
Smooth gradients and photos can show banding in a GIF because of the 256-colour limit. If the place you post to accepts WebP or MP4, keep those instead; use GIF where it is the only animated format accepted.
Measured with Kilomill
A 30-frame, 480 × 270 animated WebP of 93.2 KB became a 464 KB GIF, five times larger with every frame and its timing kept. That is why GIF is best kept for places that accept nothing else.
