How it works, honestly
A RAW file holds the sensor data, which needs developing (white balance, exposure, noise reduction) before it becomes a picture. Cameras also store a finished JPEG preview inside the RAW, the one you see on the camera’s screen. Kilomill uses that preview: you get the camera’s own look, instantly, without installing anything. The size of the preview is shown on each result.
| Camera brand | RAW files read |
|---|---|
| Canon | CR2, CR3 |
| Nikon | NEF, NRW |
| Sony | ARW |
| Fujifilm | RAF |
| Olympus / OM System, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung | ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW |
| Adobe and many phones | DNG |
How large the stored preview is depends on the camera model: many recent cameras store a full-resolution preview, others a smaller one. Each result shows the size that was found.
When you need to change exposure or white balance, or need every pixel, develop the RAW in a RAW editor (Lightroom, Capture One, darktable, RawTherapee) and export a JPG.
How to convert
- Add the RAW files; mixing brands and JPGs is fine.
- Optional: set a KB limit or a longest side for web or email.
- Check the size on each result. It is the size of the preview your camera stored; the camera’s orientation is applied.
