Output format

ICO: one file with 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px icons (up to the image size), transparent padding for non-square images.

PDF: one page per image. With several images, “Download as one PDF” puts them in a single file in list order.

File size

For JPG, WebP and AVIF. 70–80 is hard to tell from the original. PNG tries lossless and colour reduction, keeping detail unless you request a file-size target (see Advanced).

KB
KB

Aims at or below the maximum counting 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so the file passes whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

From the scanning table in Protean’s (formerly NSDL) instructions for online PAN applications, read on 28 October 2026. If the form you are filling shows different limits, follow the form. We found no official UTIITSL page with file limits, so UTIITSL numbers are not listed here.

How to prepare the photo

  1. Start from a clear, recent colour photo on a light background, face looking straight at the camera.
  2. Add it above. It is cropped to 2.5 × 3.5 cm (197 × 276 pixels), tagged 200 DPI and compressed under 20 KB.
  3. Check the face is centred. If not, use Crop & rotate on the result and frame the head and shoulders.

How to prepare the signature

  1. Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen and take a sharp, well-lit photo or scan.
  2. Open the signature settings and add the photo. The paper is turned pure white, the empty margins are cropped, and the signature is fitted into 4.5 × 2 cm at 200 DPI under 10 KB.
  3. Check it is readable; a very faint signature can become patchy, so retake it with a darker pen.

For other exams and forms, the photo and signature size table lists official limits with a one-click preset for each.

Questions and answers

Is 20 KB the limit for the PAN photo?

Protean’s instructions for online applications with scanned images give a maximum of 20 KB for the photo and 10 KB for the signature, both at 200 DPI. Some application routes show other limits on the form itself; when they differ, the form wins.

What is 3.5 × 2.5 cm in pixels?

At 200 DPI it is 197 pixels wide and 276 pixels tall (2.5 cm ÷ 2.54 × 200 and 3.5 cm ÷ 2.54 × 200, rounded).

Can I use a phone photo of my signature?

Yes. The signature settings whiten the paper, crop the margins and resize it, which removes most of the grey shadow phone photos have.
